Chateau of Vaux le Vicomte

Vaux le Vicomte, the chateau of Nicolas Fouquet, Louis XIV’s finance superintendent, is a masterpiece of modernity and elegance, which no royal residence was able to rival in the XVIIth century. Dazzled by so much splendour, the young Sun King had his minister imprisoned for life for putting him so much in the shade, and took inspiration from Vaux to build Versailles.
